The surprising statement in our title came from a recent survey conducted by furniture manufacturer AHF. It is very surprising to me because interior design is not just about how a space looks, it is also about how a space functions. If decisions about the design of a space take no account of the views of all the people who use or live in that space, then it is unlikely to be comfortable or to work for everyone. That’s just elementary design training.
At House Shape we design many domestic interiors. At the outset of a project we go to considerable lengths to understand the day to day lives of the family who live in a home. We consider the pattern of activity of all the family members so that we can design areas to accommodate the needs of the whole family. We even give family members home work that consists of creating Pinterest Boards to show us what styles, colours and furnishings are appealing to each person.
Armed with that information and a thorough survey of the space to be designed, we get to work to produce an interior that makes the most of the available space whilst at the same time providing areas that allow all members of a family to function and live comfortably under the same roof. Children need spaces to play; young people to do homework or hang out with friends; parents need places to relax, work, pursue hobbies or entertain. Only when this flow is carefully worked out do we add the finishing gloss on top which is essentially the décor scheme, which should flow through the whole place.
How a space looks is important but it should take into account more than just the personal taste of one person, unless of course they live alone. A home should work for all the people who live there; it should take into account how the family lives, the activities they are involved in, the architecture of the house and the personal taste of the owners. If the majority of the family are not consulted about the design of a home then the chances of domestic harmony are much reduced. Interior Design isn’t just about the latest trends in home décor, it’s much more about the design of a space that functions, as well as looking beautiful.
